Mass Transit Shortest Path Tree of the Bay Area

I love this striking mass transit visualization of San Francisco (built from OpenStreetMap data, naturally). Here’s the artist’s explanation of what it represents:

This image shows the shortest path from Embarcadero Station on August 1st, 2008 11:43:33 AM local time to all street intersections in the San Francisco Bay area, assuming travel by public transit (namely, BART and Caltrain) and walking. Public transit branches are colored red, while walking branches are colored black. The width of a branch corresponds to the number of shortest paths that travel through that branch. For example, the shortest route from Embarcadero to almost all destinations involves taking the BART. As a result, the BART lines are very thick.
